Samir Modi Seeks Security From Delhi Police, Cites Threat To Life From Family Members

Samir Modi, the executive director of tobacco manufacturing company Godfrey Phillips India (GPI), has formally sought a security cover from the Delhi Police, citing credible threats to his safety from family members, particularly his mother, Bina Modi.

In a letter addressed to the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sarita Vihar police station, Samir expressed grave concerns regarding orchestrated threats and physical violence directed towards him by his mother, Bina Modi, and her associate Lalit Bhasin, both of whom are the board members of GPI. He said they were sending threatening messages through intermediaries, due to which he required a round the clock security cover.

Expressing deep concern over his safety, he stated in the letter that he continues to feel threatened following the unprovoked assault by his mother’s personal security officer and “hired goons” during a board meeting on May 30. They may harm him again physically or even get him killed, he wrote, adding, if anything happens to him or his family, his mother and Lalit Bhasin should be held responsible.

Furthermore, the Godfrey Philips executive director has urged the Delhi Police to incorporate sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code into the FIR filed by him as, according to him, the attack was planned in advance.

Samir Modi’s request for security cover comes against the backdrop of a bitter feud in the family of the late industrialist KK Modi. The simmering dispute erupted when Samir accused his mother of orchestrating an attack on him. He was allegedly stopped from entering a board meeting in the company’s Jasola office on May 30 by his mother’s personal security officer, who “blocked and assaulted” him, causing him “grievous hurt” and leaving him with a broken index finger. He was however allowed to attend the meeting later, following which he had sought medical help at a hospital.
