The Society for Automotive Fitness & Environment (SAFE), a pioneering initiative by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), proudly spearheaded the celebrations for World Environment Day 2024. This momentous occasion featured an array of environmentally responsible activities executed in collaboration with automobile dealers and service stations throughout India.
This year’s World Environment Day theme—”Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience”—aptly aligned with SIAM’s commitment to sustainability. In support of this theme, SIAM organized extensive mass awareness campaigns designed to promote sustainable development within the automotive industry. As part of these initiatives, SIAM in collaboration with members and their dealerships and service stations conducted complimentary, day-long Pollution Under Control (PUC) check-ups for vehicles and distributed free PUC certificates at authorized centers. Furthermore, SIAM handed out free saplings to customers, to highlight the value of environmental conservation and encourage the adoption of eco-friendly practices.
Mr. Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, remarked on this occasion, “World Environment Day provides an appropriate moment for us to reaffirm our commitment to environmental preservation. Through our SAFE initiative, we strive to foster a culture of sustainability within the automotive sector and beyond. This year’s activities, from free PUC check-ups to sapling distributions, actively showcase our dedication to promoting eco-friendly practices and raising awareness about critical environmental issues.”
Furthermore, to promote sustainable mobility, SIAM also hosted an international conference titled “Integrating Mission LiFE in Automobile Industry: Transitioning Towards Viksit Bharat” in New Delhi, coinciding with the World Environment Day celebrations. The conference featured a distinguished line-up of speakers from government bodies, corporate sectors, Automobile OEMs, and industry experts from India and around the globe. These esteemed speakers shared their invaluable experiences and profound insights, enriching the event with their expertise and paving the way for a sustainable future in mobility.
The international conference further cemented SIAM’s role as a thought leader in sustainable mobility, with discussions focusing on strategies and practical solutions to integrate environmental sustainability into the automotive industry. The insights gained from this conference are expected to drive meaningful change and accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
